Addressing one of the most disputed issues concerning hatchling release programs around the world, SEATRU attempted to answer the question of “When is the best time to release sea turtle hatchlings?” To do so, SEATRU’s researchers compared the dispersal range and predation rates of green sea turtle hatchlings between day and night times in Chagar Hutang bay. We found that survival rates of hatchlings were higher during the day time, with 74% of hatchlings making it past the bay’s waters as compared to only 63% at night. The most prominent threat was observed coming from marine predators such as sharks and groupers, with only about 2% of hatchlings being taken by above-water predators such as raptors.
